Ever since the commercial application of the World Wide Web took off, social networking did as well, and from it, the social media followed suit. Here is a list of programs that some of you know, and some of you don’t.

AIM – America On-Line’s Instant Messenger, if you ever were on AOL at one point, you would have had this. You can get a free AIM user name from www.aol.com, that also is what you would use for iChat (Macintosh users only).

Bluepluse – Bluepulse is a free mobile social messenger. It’s a simple way to message some or all of your friends at once, for free, right from your phone.

Facebook – I’m sure you’ve either seen it, been on it, etc., this is your portal from your iPhone & iTouch.

GetGlue – GetGlue is a social network for movies, tv shows, music, and books.

IM+ All-in-One Messaging – All-in-One app for Gtalk, Yahoo, MSN/Live Messenger, AIM/iChat, ICQ, MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, Jabber and Skype chat. $9.99

LinkedIn – This is the business related social media, a place where you fill out who you are, where you’ve worked, and even get recommendations (adaboys) from your peers. Loopt – Life just got more interesting.

Loopt is the best way to see what's happening around you – which friends (from Loopt and Facebook) are nearby, which bars are hopping, and which restaurants your friends like to go to. Use Loopt’s free location-aware text messaging (“Ping”) to connect with friends, and find places to go, when you’re out and about.

MySpace Mobile – This is your portal back into your MySpace account that you once had and forgotten about, if you’ve never used MySpace, this is the social networking site that was before Facebook.

Skype – This really is a cross platform application, you would use this to make calls via the internet (a fee is required) to any phone anywhere. It also has an Instant Messaging feature built into the program, as long as everyone is on Skype, you too can chat with them there, videoconference if your device supports it, etc.

Textfree Unlimited – send SMS messages to your friends with this little tool.
