Have you ever noticed that when you drink water from glass, it just tastes better? I sure do notice it, and prefer drinking my water from glass over plastic whenever I get the chance. Yes plastic has given us safety, if you accidentally drop it, it won’t shatter, however you loose something in the taste, and for me, sometimes I jus can’t justify the sacrifice. The folks who started faucetface.com also agree that water, specifically tap water tastes better out of glass then plastic. If you check out this comparison Plastic vs. Glass you’ll see some key differences in why this argument is valid.plastic_vs_tap

One of the leaps forward in technology is the ability to build a water filtering system at very low costs, this allows countries like India to benefit from what we take for granted, clean water. bottles_to_filterFor every glass bottles you purchase, when a total of four are sold (on their own, or in combination sales) one BioSand Filter is created for a family that lives in the district in Maharashtra, India.

How the BioSand filter works - howitworks_filter_diagramThe BioSand Water Filter is simply a concrete container, enclosing layers of sand and gravel which trap and eliminate sediments, pathogens and other impurities from the water. As the contaminated water travels through the layers of sand, it gets cleaned.

The filter is relatively inexpensive to construct, costs nothing to operate and is simple to maintain. Most importantly, eliminates 90-95%† of impurities from the water.  Our non-profit partners at TMA, employ local talent in India Brij_inspecting_newly_poured_biosand_filtersto create the filters and then distribute them to families in need.

David Turpin helped design the shape of the bottles and faucetface.com got various talented artists for the illustrations.  Each bottle holds 425ml, that’s about 14.4 oz of water. There are currently three bottles to choose from.  productsThe glass bottles are designed for home & office usage, consider it a casual water container, not recommended for the active sports indivuals who run marathons, go off road biking, etc. The cap is made from BPA-free plastic and screws on. Each bottle is made by a European based manufacturer at their branch in China, if you’re worried about your health, each bottle has been independently tested by an FDA accredited lab, where they did a leach test for lead and cadmium, the plastic used for the caps were also tested for BPA and they passed all tests.

One question that comes up is “how do I know if my tap water is safe to drink”, from the faucetface.com site “This is a good question and one we struggle with. Not all tap is created equal. While the tap water in our home city of Los Angeles has not had any contaminants found in over 10 years, there are still some counties in the U.S. that have problems with consistently monitoring their tap, or have found contaminants in their water.

For the majority of Americans their tap water is safe to drink. Most drinking water violations happen in towns with 20,000 or fewer people, where resources and expertise are often inadequate. If you want to learn more about the water quality in your neighborhood, click here. “
